A lot of people enjoy running. It’s a great way to reduce stress, boost your stamina, and burn fat, but is it really the best workout? For those of you who don’t really love running or are growing tired of it, there is some good news.

There are lots of exercises out there that are just as effective at burning fat and calories as running. It is also important to remember that you actually burn more calories through high-intensity weight training than you do through running. This is something that most people don’t realise.

Generally speaking, the amount of calories that we burn during a workout is calculated by the energy we expend during aerobic exercise. This is great for calculating how many calories we burn during low- and medium-intensity exercises, but it does nothing to determine the caloric worth of anaerobic workouts.

According to researchers at the University of Southern Maine, we burn up to 71 per cent more calories during weight training than what was once believed. To put this into perspective, a fast-paced circuit workout with weight training might be just as effective as a six-minute mile run.

Does this mean that your only options are running or weight training? Not exactly. There are actually quite a few cardio exercises that are great at burning calories and strengthening your muscles.

Here are a few of those options:

  • Kettlebell swing. If you want to burn lots of calories while working your quads and glutes, the kettlebell swing is for you. In a 20-minute workout, you will likely burn about 404 calories and get your heart going. This exercise is particularly effective if you aren’t used to it.
  • Indoor rowing. Indoor rowing is an extremely good way to work out your legs, back, and arms while burning a ton of calories. In about 30 minutes of intense rowing, it is possible to burn about 377 calories.
  • Jumping rope. Get back to the basics by jumping rope. A moderate-intensity workout will consist of about 100-120 skips in a minute and burns about 13 calories every minute. It is more effective than running because you’re using more muscle groups whilst challenging your coordination and balance.
  • Cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing involves pulling with your upper body and pushing with your lower body, which means you’re going to get an excellent workout. It might not look that challenging, but you’ll see just how effective it can be once you try it.
