While all the promised benefits are healthful and true, there are rumored side effects of whey protein when it is used – or used too much. However, up to now, there is no concrete evidence of these said side effects, but it will be listed here due to its plausibility.
Due to the fact that it is the resulting product from cheese, it can cause negative effects to lactose intolerant individuals. To simply put it, lactose is a substance of sugar found in dairy products that are difficult to digest by lactose intolerant people; thus, incurring the negative effect. Although whey ordinarily doesn’t have too much lactose content, it is still likely to yield problems.
It is believed that prolonged intake of whey will incur the formation of kidney stones; however, even though it is likely, it is only believed to occur when it is consumed in high quantities.
High intakes of whey proteins are said to damage the liver due to the fact that the liver will need to process additional protein acquired from whey. Medical experts believe that this is true because of the increased pressure on the liver.
pH Increase in Blood
pH increase is blood is believed to be induced from excessive whey consumption. This is detrimental to one’s health because the kidneys will have a difficult time metabolizing it, which leads to getting acidic blood.
As mentioned earlier, an increase of pH in blood turns it acidic. When this happens, the body will autonomously attempt to revert it back to basic blood continuously; wherein, it necessitates the calcium compounds in the bones to be released. In the end, it may cause a severe lack of calcium deposits that reduce the bone’s density, which leads to osteoporosis.
There is a form of whey, however, that may reduce the likeliness of some side effects from occurring. But it equally increases the likeliness of some. This form is called whey protein isolate.
So, what is whey protein isolate?
An isolate is a form of whey that has a higher concentration of pure protein. It is also the form that nearly doesn’t have any lactose, cholesterol, fat, and carbohydrate content. In other words, it may be used by lactose intolerant individuals. Moreover, due to its higher percentage of protein, it may increase the chances of the other aforementioned side effects, which are the formation of kidney stones, liver damage, and osteoporosis.
Although the fact remains that there is no concrete proof of these side effects, it is still better to be cautious about it and only consume whey protein in moderation. Remember that anything taken excessively is always harmful to one’s health.
