The main source of the plant is the diterpene Forskolin, which provides the activation of the enzyme adenylate cyclase, responsible for raising the rate of cAMP in cells.

Although the Ayurvedic plant Coleus Forskohlii has been used for medicinal purposes for several thousand years, it was necessary to wait until the 1970s to isolate its potent active ingredient. In 1974, a group of researchers actually managed to extract forskolin from the roots of Coleus Forskohlii.

From this discovery, this natural compound has been the subject of numerous studies. It quickly interested researchers for its ability to activate adenylate cyclase, an enzyme involved in the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP). This molecule is a cellular messenger involved in numerous biochemical reactions in the body. Scientific investigations have also made it possible to highlight the action of forskolin in thermogenesis, that is, in the process of energy production by lipolysis. In other words, forskolin extracted from the Coleus Forskohlii plant acts as a fat burner, stimulating the combustion of fats. This Ayurvedic plant can therefore be an important asset in terms of weight loss to sustain or even accelerate weight loss.

To deepen the benefits of the Coleus Forskohlii plant, a research team designed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 30 people who were overweight or obese. Participants were divided into two groups. For 12 weeks, the first group took a placebo while the second group took a supplement based on Coleus Forskohlii extract.

While taking the supplement, both groups also followed a low-calorie diet. To compare the effects between the two groups, the researchers took into account different parameters such as body weight, body mass index (BMI), abdominal circumference, and hip circumference. At the end of the analyzes carried out, the study authors revealed several beneficial effects in the group that took the Coleus Forskohlii supplement. They found, in effect, a decrease in the abdominal and hip circumference, an increase in the levels of “good cholesterol” (HDL cholesterol), as well as an improvement in insulin concentration and insulin resistance.

The results of this clinical trial confirm the interest of the Coleus Forskohlii plant for weight management and prevention of complications of metabolic syndrome. In fact, this Ayurvedic plant could be used to combat weight gain but also hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure.
